Is External Insulation Worth It?

Absolutely! There’s a reason adding external insulation to your home is becoming more popular than ever, and it’s because of the range of benefits it can bring your way. An external insulation grant will mean:

  1. Better energy efficiency at home
  2. Money saved on energy bills due to your home’s improved thermal performance
  3. Reduced carbon emissions from your home helping to save the environment
  4. There’s plenty of additional benefits, too, but the main benefit when considering if external insulation is worth it is the second point. The money you’ll save each month will eventually cover the cost of installation – and if you qualify for external wall insulation grants, then you could receive free external wall insulation anyway – meaning your new insulation will put more money back into your pocket through energy bill savings each month.

What Is The Great British Insulation Scheme 2023?

The Great British Insulation Scheme, formerly known as ECO+, begins in summer 2023 and will last until March 2026. It’s set to offer a total of £1 billion in funding to the least energy efficient homes in Great Britain – but there are certain criteria you’ll need to meet in order to qualify for free external wall insulation.

How Do You Qualify For The Great British Insulation Scheme?

The aim of the scheme is to insulate the least energy efficient homes in Great Britain to help vulnerable households control spiralling energy bills, reduce the carbon emissions their homes produce, and improve their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings.

In order to qualify for the Great British Insulation Scheme, you’ll need to be:

  • Living in a home with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D-G, AND
  • Living in a council tax band A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and Wales

OR

  • Be receiving means tested benefits AND
  • Have an EPC rating of D or below

If you meet this criteria, you may qualify for an external insulation grant under the scheme.

How Much Will I Save With External Wall Insulation?

The UK government estimates that households in the least energy efficient homes could save as much as £300 to £400 each year on energy bill savings alone. And the amount of money you’ll receive towards the cost of external wall insulation could mean the insulation is free too.

The amount of money you’ll receive for the Great British Insulation Scheme will be decided on a case by case basis, so some will receive a grant that covers the full cost of external wall insulation, and others will receive a grant that covers most of the cost of external wall insulation.

Does This Apply To You?
  • Homeowner or tenant in the UK
  • Receive income-related benefits
  • Or are a low income household
  • Or a low energy efficiency home

What Is The ECO4 Scheme For External Wall Insulation?

You’ll no doubt have already heard of ECO4 in some capacity – but you might not realise that the scheme offers external wall insulation grants as well. First introduced in April 2022 and running until the end of March 2026, the scheme offers £4 billion worth of funding to support eco home improvements across thousands of poorly performing UK homes in terms of their energy efficiency.

As with any grant, though, there are eligibility criteria that must be met in order to qualify for the external wall or solid wall insulation grants that are on offer here.

Who Is Eligible For ECO4 Insulation Grants?

This scheme, much like the Great British Insulation Scheme, aims to support low income households living in energy inefficient homes, but there are different criteria for each scheme.

To qualify for ECO4 support you must meet these requirements:

  • You’re in receipt of government benefits OR someone in your household/a tenant is (a list of applicable benefits can be found below)
  • You have an inefficient heating system with a D-G energy efficiency rating
  • You receive child benefit AND your household income falls below a specific threshold (more on this below)

  • Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee

Child Benefit Household Income Thresholds

So long as you’re in receipt of child benefit and have a total annual household income less than the numbers shown below you should be eligible for external wall insulation funding under ECO4:
